The Vegetarian Society has named two northern restaurants as joint winners of the 2008 Best UK Independent Restaurant for Vegetarian Food.

Dandelion and Burdock in Sowerby Bridge (pictured right), West Yorkshire, and The Waiting Room in Stockton on Tees in County Durham were both named as the best venues in Britain that cater for vegetarians.

The Vegetarian Society was not only looking for a well-balanced menu with plenty of variety, but for good service, a warm welcome and value. The two restaurants were awarded a joint first position after fulfilling these requirements, beating competitors Canteen in Cardiff, Demuths in Bath, and Relish in Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire.

Caroline Chisholm, Head of Communications at the Vegetarian Society said, “Traditionally, the North is often seen as offering poor choice for vegetarians, so we’re delighted to see that it now boasts two of the best veggie restaurants in the UK. Congratulations to both Dandelion & Burdock and The Waiting Room for helping to break the mould.”

Also praised for its dedication to vegetarians was The Red Lion pub in Great Bricett, Suffolk, which was named the Best UK Independent Pub for Vegetarian Food after mystery diners raved about the exclusively vegetarian menu and warmth of the venue. Other pubs shortlisted were The George in Brighton, and 78 in Glasgow.

The winners of all categories will be presented with their awards next month.
