Hospitality businesses are being warned to plan ahead for the huge logistical challenge posed by the 2012 Olympics, following the release of detailed hotspot information from Transport for London (TfL).

Although around 70 per cent of road traffic in Greater London will be unaffected by the 2012 Olympics, there is expected to be an additional three million journeys made in the capital on the busiest days. TfL’s hotspot information advises the most effected hospitality businesses to ‘re-time, re-route or re-mode’ in order to make the most of the event.

Upon publication of the information, London Mayor Boris Johnson said: “My message is clear - prepare to profit during the 2012 Olympics. By planning ahead using the information published today, we will not only keep London moving and open for business, but London will benefit financially from the Games and for many years to come through increased investment and visitors.”

The information comes as a response to requests for more detailed information about planning for the 2012 Olympics. Available at www.tfl.gov.uk/2012 , the information provided for hospitality businesses includes:

  • Day-by-day road, Tube and DLR station hotspot information
  • Transport impact maps
  • TfL’s travel guide
  • Deliveries and collection information
  • Case studies of other businesses’ preparations

London restaurant, café and deli Fortnum & Mason is one of the businesses that have welcomed the release. Managing director Beverley Aspinall said: “The information TfL has released today is one huge step closer to helping plan for this to become ‘Business Ready.’

“The capital will come alive for the Olympics and we look forward to welcoming thousands of visitors through our doors. To give them the service Fortnum & Mason has built a reputation around, we must ensure our staff and deliveries can get to our store on time.”

For restaurants running a delivery service in London, TfL have also developed an online road journey planning tool, available on the same website, which shows the additional journey time the busiest times and in the busiest locations.

Earlier this year, BigHospitality published a Planning for the 2012 Olympics special feature, which aims to provide hospitality businesses with everything they need to profit from the event, including a section for transport and deliveries .
