The advice, aimed in particular at hotel concierges and events staff, comes as London gears up to host the 2012 Olympics in July next year.
Martin Couchman, deputy chief executive of the BHA, said the Metropolitan Police's advice is that the unauthorised selling of Olympic event tickets in a public place or in the course of business, is a criminal offence and hotel concierges who offer to sell or advertise a ticket are at risk of being fined.
“The maximum penalty for unauthorised selling of Olympic tickets is currently being increased to £20,000 for each offence,” he added.
Concierges who are asked to provide tickets for guests should reply that they are unavailable and cannot be supplied, said the IoH's chief executive Philippe Rossiter.
