Spanish restaurant and bar group Camino is to open a new site at Bankside in Southwark.

Camino Tapas Bar will open at new retail and leisure development Bankside Mix in June where it will sit alongside restaurant brands such as Tortilla, Vapiano and Leon.

The two-storey 100-cover site, designed by Blacksheep, will feature an open kitchen, bar area and jamón counter which will serve acorn-fed Ibérico black pig ham from D.O.s Extremadura, Guijuelo, Pedroches and Huelva, carved by ‘cortador de jamón’, Rafael Vázquez Carrión.

Camino's executive chef Nacho Del Campo has designed the restaurant's menu which features a selection of tapas and sharing platters with special dishes including pulpo – pan-roasted whole octopus tentacle, purple potatoes, paprika and olive oil; morcilla de Burgos – pan-fried black pudding and spicy alegría peppers and arroz negro – black rice, cuttlefish, squid ink and alioli.

The drinks selection includes Spanish craft beers, premium Spanish lager Mahou - available in 2/3 pint glasses - and the brand’s renowned Spanish wine list.

The restaurant and bar will open every day from lunch with Spanish brunch and tapas offered at weekends.

Camino, founded by Richard Bigg, also has sites at King's Cross and Monument and two specialist bars - Bar Pepito and Copa de Cava at King's Cross and Blackfriar's respectively.

A fourth Camino site at Canary Wharf closed last year after plans to build two large towers in the area were abolished.

"They were the reason we took the site, and trade was always pretty tough for us outside of Summer," said Bigg. "However we are looking to be back on track now with the next site launching soon, and once that is established we’ll be looking for more opportunities again."
