Gaucho, the Argentine-style steak restaurant group, is to open its first site in seven years, in Birmingham’s Colmore District on 8 May.

The 120-cover restaurant and bar will be on the ground floor at 55 Colmore Row opposite the five-star hotel The Grand, which is currently being renovated.

The restaurant will serve Gaucho’s familiar menu of Argentinian steaks, seafood, fish, homemade sausages, plus a range of lamb and poultry dishes, and a wine list offering a choice of over 200 Argentinian varieties selected by Phil Crozier, Gaucho’s director of wines.

There will also be the group’s regular ‘Electro Brunch’ (brunch with music) event on Saturdays, as well as beef and wine tasting masterclasses.

Design-wise, the site has been created by Patsy Godik of interior design and branding agency Conceptualise, and takes inspiration from the group’s flagship London Swallow Street restaurant, which opened last year.

This takes influences from Argentina itself, including nods to the giant Ombu trees found in the country’s urban and rural landscapes. The colours will focus on neutral and pale gray shades, plus carved natural wood, mirrors, and soft lighting.

“This is our first opening in the UK for seven years, and is an incredibly important decision in the development of Gaucho,” says Tracey Matthews, group chief operating officer.

“We have to be sure that a city is ready to receive a Gaucho, and having looked at locations around the UK, we decided that Birmingham with its exciting growth potential is the perfect home for us.”

Gaucho, whose parent company is Gaucho Holdings, has announced plans for rapid expansion in recent years. It now runs to 14 sites across the UK, and is poised to open in Twickenham in the coming months. It now also operates locations in Dubai, Hong Kong, as well as the Sucre brand in Buenos Aires.

Its former managing director, Martin Williams, left in 2014 to set up his own growing steak and raw brand, M Restaurants, but during his decade with the group, grew it from six sites to 15 overall.
