London-based coffee group Grind has revealed more details about its new flasghip site in Clerkenwell, set to open in Old Street in November.

From founders David Abrahamovitch and DJ Kaz James, the Clerkenwell Grind is near the first ever Shoreditch Grind site - which also opened in Old Street, five years ago.

Its opening was first announced in September this year, after the company opened its new Shoreditch roastery (following a successful £1.3m crowdfunding bid), with a view to expanding by three or four more sites by 2017.

Spread over three floors and 3,000 sq ft, Clerkenwell will be the group's seventh venue, and its second restaurant-style venue - after the London Grind launched in London Bridge. It will incorporate an all-day restaurant, bar, and a late night club-bar with a DJ area (featuring artists from the recording studio that the group also opened above the Shoreditch Grind).

The group's other venues - including Soho Grind on Beak Street, and Holborn Grind in the Hoxton Hotel Holborn - are all cafe-bars.

Open all day from 7am, the Clerkenwell site will serve breakfast and brunch, through to lunch and dinner. There will be a bar upstairs, with a club-bar downstairs.

Typical dishes from head chef Mauro will include beetroot-cured salmon and kimchee, mushroom breakfast croquettes, truffle hash, poached duck egg, and French toasted banana bread. Lunch and dinner will be along the lines of Isle of Mull scallops with samphire; aubergine and goats curd; and miso-glazed lamb spare ribs and red snapper.

After dinner, the downstairs club-bar will serve a range of original cocktails, including the group's signature Espresso Martini, plus a range of wines from Italy, Australia and New Zealand

Decor will include a signature Grind neon sign - designed by Toronto-based tattoo artist Curt Montgomery - plus interiors including royal blue panelling, pink velvet booths, and marble bars.

Co-founder Abrahamovitch said: “When Kaz [James] and I first opened Shoreditch Grind five years ago we wanted somewhere to drink coffee and cocktails all day, and we put in a recording studio upstairs so we’d never have to leave. You’ll still find us there most days, but along with the Grind we’ve also grown up a little, and Clerkenwell Grind is our new perfect night out.”

The Grind group is backed by John Ayton MBE.
