Jamaican ‘patty’ concept hits London
The 12-cover site, situated on the former Spud site in New Row, will serve a broad selection of patties - which can be likened to Cornish pasties in style and contain various fillings and spices- all freshly baked by renowned Jamaican chef Collin Brown.
The concept is the brainchild of Theresa Roberts, who is making her first foray into restaurants with hopes to explore a ‘gap in the UK grab-and-go market’ for authentic Jamaican food.
“Everybody in Jamaica enjoys a patty,” Roberts told BigHospitality. “We want to bring this product to the UK market in an authentic, branded way. There’s a huge amount of room to grow this business in London and the UK. Nobody’s ever done Jamaican food like this in a branded way, so we absolutely want to expand.
“As soon as the first site’s settled, we want to push the expansion button and get this rolled out – we want to take Jamaica Patty Co all over Britain.
On the menu
Jamaica Patty Co’s Covent Garden restaurant, which opens in mid-March, will offer jerk chicken, prawn, curried goat and saltfish and ackee-flavoured patties, with prices starting at £3.95.
Brown, who also owns Chef Collin Brown restaurant in London’s Docklands, will also serve up a range of Jamaican soups as well as Jamaican porridge, Tortuga rum cake, banana bread, plantain crisps and Devon House ice cream. Drinks will include Blue Mountain coffee, freshly squeezed coconut water and soursop juice – renowned for its health benefits.
Earlier this week, BigHospitality reported that another fast-casual Jamaican concept, Dub Jam, is also opening in Covent Garden next month from London-based bar operator Adventure Bars.
Jamaica Patty Co will open at 26 New Row, Covent Garden, in mid-March.
