Josh Eggleton, head chef and co-owner of Michelin-starred pub The Pony & Trap, is to open a second site of his Salt & Malt fish and chip shop, on Bristol’s harbour side.

Salt & Malt Cargo is set to open in spring, occupying five ground-floor units at the new Cargo 2 development at Wapping Wharf.

It will have 35 seats inside, and 35 on an outdoor terrace, with views over Bristol’s Floating Harbour. As well as the signature gluten-free fish and chips, the site will hold a series of pop-up events and tasting menus from Eggleton and his team.

There will also be a fully licensed bar.

The original Salt & Malt restaurant – which bills itself as a fish café, tearoom and takeaway ‒ opened in 2015, and offers views over Chew Valley Lake.

“We’ve been thinking about a second Salt & Malt for a while now, but it was all about the right location,” says Eggleton. “It was always important that any other Salt & Malt locations would be by the water. It needed to have that waterfront, and community vibe and Cargo 2 is the perfect spot for that.”

Eggleton, who also runs the Yurt Lush café and bar at Bristol’s Eat Drink Bristol Fashion development, adds: “Over the past couple of years Bristol’s food scene has really come on leaps and bounds. There are so many great places popping up all over, and the Cargo developments really show this. [There are] loads of great places to eat and drink, all in a nice community.”

The new venue will join a number of other local businesses at the Cargo development, including Gambas, Pickled Brisket, Cupp Bubble Tea, and Oliver Ice Cream.

Salt & Malt forms part of Eggleton and family’s portfolio, which also features The Pony & Trap in Chew Magna (run with his parents and sister Holly), and Yurt Lush. He is also the brand ambassador for Caple kitchen appliances.
