Leeds-based Stew & Oyster opens second site

Stew & Oyster Oakwood opened its doors to the public on 4 May on Roundhay Road in the northern suburb of Leeds in a building that was formerly home to a branch of the bank HSBC. 

The new location is in contrast to that of its city centre sister site at Calls Landing, with the idea that it will become a 'new local with a twist'. 

Stew & Oyster manager, Gordon Dickinson said: “We’ve had great success with Stew & Oyster Calls Landing, having built a customer base of people who enjoy a laid back atmosphere and the friendliness of a real local, but in the city. We get a lot of people coming out after work to the city centre bar, alongside those who live in town. With Stew & Oyster Oakwood we want to provide the same service for those who live or work in North Leeds.” 

Regional beers​

As with Stew & Oyster Calls Landing, the Oakwood site will serve craft beers and ales from Yorkshire, including Natural Blonde, a bespoke beer made for the pub by Ossett Brewery and the Ilkley Brewery's stout MJ Fortis. The pub also features a selection of guest ales and its team is in constant talks with micro-breweries across the region to source new beers to sell. 

Alongside the portfolio of regional beers and ales, Stew & Oyster serves a simple casual-dining menu, which unsurprisingly features a variety of stews, alongside Irish oysters, antipasti and bruschetta. 

The bar is also open throughout the day serving tea, coffee and cakes and offers free newspapers and Wi-Fi for customers.

Expansion plans​

The success of the independently-owned Stew & Oyster, which opened its first site in Calls Landing three years ago, means the company is already looking to expand outside of Leeds. 

A spokesperson for the company said it was already considering developing the brand further 'but would perhaps look to open another bar in a different city.'
