Average household spend on drinking and eating out fell sharply in November, according to the latest Greene King Leisure Tracker.

According to BigHospitality's sister publication M&C Allegra, drinking out spend was hardest hit with November’s figure of £39.40 down 15 per cent month on month and 8 per cent on last year.

Eating out spend at £76.32 was down 7 per cent on October and 2 per cent on last November. Average household spend on other leisure was also down month on month but flat on last year.

Overall leisure spend was down 8 per cent on October and 2 per cent on last year to £188.41 per household.

On a year-­on-year basis, households in London and the South East reduced their spending on out of home leisure by 3 per cent versus a 2 per cent fall among households in the rest of Britain.

Family households continue to buck a largely consistent trend in leisure spending, with Other Leisure up £18 (19 per cent) year-­on-­year – an increase that offsets a £7 fall in spending among households without kids.

Fiona Gunn, Greene King group marketing director, said: “With the Christmas festivities fast­-approaching, Brits tightened their belts in November, reducing their spending on Drinking and Eating Out compared to last month. This was exacerbated further by a particularly busy October, when households up and down the country were going out to enjoy the closing stages of the Rugby World Cup and celebrate Halloween.”
