Restaurant, pub and bar operator Mitchells & Butlers (M&B) has this year made its R200 debut, coming in at second on Restaurant magazine’s list of the 200 largest restaurant and food-led pub groups in the UK, ranked by number of sites.

Gondola Group, which operates the Pizza Express, Zizzi and Byron brands, topped this year's list once again, with 664 UK sites to its name.

But M&B, which has not previously featured on the list as it was seen more as a drinks-led brand, follows closely behind with 641 sites - driven by the continued expansion of its Harvester format and the launch of its new South East Asian cuisine concept TUK CHO . It also has the likes of Toby Carvery, Browns Bar and Brasserie and All Bar One within its UK portfolio.

Last month, BigHospitality reported that M&B had a positive sales growth in its half-year results, driven by food, although profit for the business had dipped and poor weather hit recent sales.

The Restaurant Group – which manages the Frankie & Benny’s, Chiquito and Garfunkle brands, shifted down to third in the list, with 400 venues across the country.
