Mariott International will open its first Residence Inn hotel in Edinburgh later this year, as part of plans to expand the long-stay brand in Europe.

The 107-room Residence Inn Edinburgh is due to open in October 2011 under a management agreement with Gladedale Ventures.

It will be the second Residence Inn in Europe, following the opening of a hotel in Munich this autumn, and sets the pace for further openings.

“Residence Inn is Marriott’s third largest global lodging brand and we see great potential for further expansion of the brand throughout Europe,” said Amy McPherson, president and managing director of Marriott International in Europe.

Long-stay hotels

Residence Inn by Marriott currently has over 600 properties in the US, Canada and Costa Rica, and already considers itself a leader in the extended stay lodging segment.

Hotels are designed to facilitate longer stays, providing spacious suites with separate living and sleeping areas. They also include fully functional kitchens, grocery delivery and 24-hour markets.

The Residence Inn Edinburgh, which will include 107 suites, will be located in the Quartermile development in the city centre. When complete, the Quartermile mixed-use development will include 900 luxury apartments, over 10,000 sq m of retail space and over 30,000 sq m of office space.

In 2010 Marriott International announced its goal to double its portfolio in Europe by 2015.

In addition to expansion in Europe, Marriott also plans to bring the Residence Inn brand to South America next year with the opening of its first property in Guayaquil, Ecuador.
