Stars of World’s 50 Best Restaurants descend on London for ‘The Lab’

A selection of international chefs from the World’s 50 Best Restaurants list are uniting ahead of this year’s event to run ‘The Lab’, a three-night restaurant experience offering live entertainment, masterclasses and an interactive mixology workshop.

Hosted by food writer and chef Gizzi Erskine, The Lab will launch on 25 April at London’s Tobacco Docks, with a star-studded line-up of World’s 50 Best chefs from the likes of Noma, currently top of the list,​ D.O.M (fourth) and Osteria Francescana (fifth) all on-board.

Flying the flag for the UK at The Lab will be Ashley Palmer-Watts, head chef at Dinner by Heston Blumenthal, which was the highest of three English restaurants on the list​last year, placing ninth.

Palmer-Watts will present alongside world-renowned forager Miles Irving on the live stage, as well as pioneering drinks creator Tony Conigliaro.

Also presenting at The Lab will be Alex Atala, head chef at D.O.M, and Osteria Francescana’s chef patron Massimo Bottura. Lars Williams, head of research and development at the World Number One restaurant Noma, will host and curate the Noma Flavour Test at The Lab, holding tutorials and masterclasses.

Meanwhile, the AEG Experiment at The Lab will showcase the creativity and thinking of many of the UK’s other top chefs including Bo London’s Alvin Leung, James Knappett from Kitchen Table, Bruno Loubet and Duck & Waffle’s Daniel Doherty.

Other experiences will include an ‘audience with’ Research Lounge for insider info, tips and techniques from the professionals. An interactive mixology lab and ‘pour-your-own-beer’ feature will run alongside the experimental cocktail bar.

Following its 10th anniversary in 2012,​The World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2013, sponsored by S.Pellegrino & Acqua Panna and organised by Restaurant magazine, returns to London’s historic Guildhall on Monday 29 April.

Restaurant magazine’s editor William Drew said: “Each year we look forward to announcing the date of the awards as it marks the beginning of The World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2013 season.

“We strive to ensure the results reflect the current global dining scene, with criteria enabling members to vote far and wide from small, unknown restaurants in secluded regions to the best known restaurants in the world.

“We are proud of the integrity upheld by our Academy and have no doubt the 2013 list will prove to be as exciting and inspiring as ever.”

The Lab is a concept collaboration between Taste Festivals, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary in June, and AEG kitchen appliances. More information and the full line-up of participating chefs at the event will be released closer to its launch on 25 April, with tickets going on-sale this Wednesday (27 March) at www.thelabevent.co.uk​.
