The ten-minute film, The Power of Advice, has been produced for the global executive search and advisory firm to get an insight into how taking and giving advice has impacted the careers of some of the high-flyers in the hospitality industry.

Maybourne Hotel Group

Among the hoteliers interviewed for the film are Stephen Alden of Maybourne Hotel Group which operates the Conaught, Claridge’s and The Berkeley in London. In the film Alden suggests a good advisor is key to getting to the top of the industry.

“There are a few people who have stayed with me as constants who I have gone back to. People who have been genuine and people I have respected and people who have had a high level of integrity; people who aren’t afraid to not always tell you what you want to hear,” he said.

Patrick Fitzgibbon, senior vice president development Europe & Africa for Hilton Worldwide, and Simon Turner, president global development for Starwood Hotels & Resorts, both UK based, are also among the 20 hospitality figures featured.

Stimulate debate

The film explores themes around giving and receiving advice in business and the contributors share some of the places they turn to for advice in their careers that helped them reach the top of the industry.

Keith Kefgen, chief executive of HVS Executive Search which is a division of the global hospitality consultancy HVS, said the film was designed to stimulate debate into how industry leaders shape their careers and make key business decisions.

“My partners and I thought the Power of Advice was a theme worthy of further exploration. Rarely is the role of advisor discussed, and yet most successful business leaders seek advice on a regular basis. We are extremely pleased with the quality and message of the film and hope that it proves to be thought-provoking for our viewers,” he said.

The Hobo Film Company has produced the film from their London base with an original score by a French composer. Interviews were filmed in London, New York, Las Vegas and Hong Kong and the heads of global operators including Wyndham Hotel Group and Four Seasons Hotels & Resorts are also part of the film.

The first screening of The Power of Advice took place last week at a conference in Mumbai and will be followed by further five-minute films over the next year. They will all be able to be viewed online at www.powerofadvice.com but the full film can be watched below.
