UK’s top 20 fish and chip shops announced
The competition celebrates one of the UK’s most traditional dishes and is now in its 27th year, recognising fish and chip shops throughout the country. The final competition winner will be announced in an awards ceremony at The Lancaster London Hotel on 20 January 2015.
The top 20 shops have been chosen across 10 regions. The businesses will now be further judged by industry experts on unannounced visits that will examine a number of criteria including product quality, sustainable sourcing policies, marketing initiatives and customer service.
Chief executive of Seafish Paul Williams said: “I would like to offer up my congratulations to the shortlisted shops and wish them the best of luck as they battle for the regional winner title. The bar rises year on year for the awards and I can’t wait to see the top fryers go head-to-head at this year’s ceremony.”
The next round
The top 20 fish and chip shops will now be whittled down to a top 10, which will be announced by Seafish in October. The top 10 shops will be invited to Norway by award sponsor the Norwegian Seafood Council.
The UK director of the Norwegian Seafood Council Jack-Robert Møller said: “We would like to offer huge congratulations to the top 20 shops in the running for the Independent Takeaway award. Each year we look forward to sponsoring the awards because it’s our chance to meet like-minded people who are equally as passionate about the industry as we are, and who can share our enjoyment of high quality, sustainable fish.
“In Norway, we are proud to supply our delicious Frozen At Sea cod and haddock, sourced from the cold, clear waters of the Barents Sea to UK fish and chip shops. We wish all of the 20 finalists the very best of luck for the next round.”
