Restaurant Martin Wishart has been voted Toptable’s Best Rated place to eat in the UK over Michel Roux Jr’s London restaurant Le Gavroche

Edinburgh’s ‘flawless’ Restaurant Martin Wishart has been voted the UK’s Best Rated place to eat in Toptable’s 2009 Top 100 Restaurant Awards.

The restaurant pipped Wishart’s former training ground and London favourite Le Gavroche to the number one spot in both the Best Rated and Over £45 categories, after receiving glowing reviews from the online restaurant booking site’s users for its ‘flawless’ menu and ‘impeccable’ service.

Wishart said that despite Michel Roux Jr’s restaurant winning the Most Romantic category, his two big wins over his former mentor were ‘quite sweet’. “I’m delighted that we have been nominated so often in these awards. It is always satisfying to receive recognition and praise but it is particularly gratifying that the impartial views and ratings of our diners have positioned us so highly.”

Marcus Wareing , who was looked over for a third Michelin star for his eponymous restaurant at The Berkeley, was named the Toptable Top Chef, beating the likes of Jamie Oliver, Michael Caines and Gary Rhodes to the position.

Other big winners in the awards included 500 Restaurant in London for being Best for Value; Strada in Clapham in the Under £25 category; Marco Polo in London in the Dining with Friends category; Case Restaurant in Suffolk as the best Hidden Gem, and Le Bamboche in Paris as the best International Venue.

The awards also revealed the most searched for cuisine on Toptable as Indian, followed by Italian and Halal.
