Allerzip, developed by the Chicago-based company, is an encasement for mattresses and pillows that stops bed bugs from reaching sleepers and biting them. Because the bugs are not able to feed off people they eventually starve and die.
The Allerzip mattress protector is waterproof, hygienic and sterile and includes an anti-viral bed bug device which Protect-A-Bed says also offers protection against allergens and dust mites.
Having been a success in the US, the product is now being launched in the UK and Europe.
“Protect-a-Bed has sold thousands of these encasements to hotels and motels around the world,” said Richard Cooper, technical director for Cooper Pest Solutions, who worked with Protect-A-Bed in the creation of Allerzip.
“During our initial service, we also use the product, encasing all mattresses and box springs. It’s not an option; it’s a requirement. I can’t imagine what it would be like to do bedbug work without it.”
Bed bugs can live for up to a year without a meal and are capable of reproducing rapidly.

Waste of money
So what is to stop the bed bugs who live in the headboard, night stand, bed skirt or chair from coming to feed on you? Are you going to wrap all the furniture? These covers protect the bed, not the people sleeping on them.

Such a shame that they still try to sell this as preventative for bedbugs when its simple. A bedbug does not know if you have your mattress encased when you meet it in a hotel, bus train, cinema or other location so how can they prevent.
Box spring or base encasement does not work in the UK because of the wheels on the underside of the bed so they one is a lot of spin and no value. These is also a huge issue in the US with these products tearing during use and potentially releasing trapped bedbugs.
They are not recommended in the European code of best practice for bedbug control and are unlikely to be able to pay for such an endorsement.
