Speaking at the launch of the Women 1st Female Chef Programme, the Michelin-starred chef, who is currently operational director, executive chef and partner at Abode Hotels, called for kitchens to stop hindering the progress of female chefs.

“Chefs are one of the hardest positions to fill and the industry needs to secure the best talent rather than shun part of the workforce,” he said.

The call has come as research from sector skills council People 1st found that over 60 per cent of chefs are male, a number that is significantly increased in fine dining kitchens.

Provide training for females

“Furthermore, today's chefs need to have more than just good cooking skills, they need to be able to manage and motivate kitchen staff, supervise the gross profit levels and crucially, be business savvy. It is therefore crucial for employers to provide the right training for their female chefs to help take their careers to the next level.”

The programme, launched by People 1st, has been designed in collaboration with Caines to provide bespoke training for female chefs, helping them to bridge the skills gap with the opposite sex.

Modules include motivating staff, business planning, menu engineering and communication skills.
