MasterChef judge Gregg Wallace has called on restaurants and pubs to join the Eat Seasonably campaign to capitalise on the public’s growing appetite for seasonal eating.

Wallace is fronting the campaign that aims to introduce more people to the pleasures and benefits of seasonal eating.

Wallace said: “All the top chefs now cook seasonally.  You wouldn’t find asparagus on their menus in January or raspberry desserts in December because they’d be too embarrassed to use produce that aren’t locally in season.

“Whatever the top chefs do, everyone else will follow a few years later so now people are starting to expect seasonal items on the menu.”

Real opportunity

Wallace believes there is a real opportunity for the hospitality industry to get involved in the campaign and celebrate the best of the seasons with their customers.

“Now is the time for businesses to join the growing movement and be seen as leaders in this field,” he said.

A major push from the Eat Seasonably campaign this year is aiming to drive membership and operators can sign up for free at The Partner Map  to gain access to materials,  tips and advice.
