Travelodge has appointed its first chief technology officer as part of a plan to innovate its digital operations.

Jonathan Greensted, formerly interim IT Director at the group, led the rollout of self-service check-in desks across the hotel chain and upgraded its website.

Now he will be heading up Travelodge’s digital team, working to develop its customer-facing and internal technology.

Digital growth

It comes at a time when hotel groups are increasingly turning to technology to streamline the guest experience.

Travelodge, which celebrated 30 years in business last June, created an app with US tech firm Monscierge in 2015 allowing guests to easily locate and book rooms while on the move.

Greensted said he was planning to develop the ‘next generation of systems’ for the hotel group.

“There is great potential to use innovative technology to drive further growth right across the business – including the ongoing modernisation of our digital offer and our hotel applications,” he said.

Travelodge’s website receives more than a million visits a week and the company serves over 18m customers a year.

The budget group, which operates 533 hotels in the UK, Spain and Ireland, is planning a major expansion push with the aim of opening a further 250 sites over the next few years.

Peter Gowers, chief executive at Travelodge, said: “The use of technology is critical to both our customer offer and our low-cost operations.

“Jonathan’s extensive experience will help ensure innovative technology plays a key role in the ongoing development of the business.”
