Dark Star head brewer Mark Tranter has picked 2012 to launch a 5.7 per cent ABV Pale Ale called Revelation, having waited eight years for the market to be right.

Tranter, of the Sussex-based brewer, has held the concept of a stronger beer for more than eight years, but has waited until now to brew it.

"Eight or nine years ago when I did the first brew of American Pale Ale (APA), my initial idea was to brew it to 5.7 per cent, but after talks with publicans and wholesalers it had to be tempered back to 4.7 per cent for the UK market.

"No bad thing – APA has become something of an institution – a great top end session beer, picking us up countless awards. I’m dead proud. But that 5.7 percenter was always there in the back of my brain.

"As the UK market has changed and evolved over the past few years with people open to drinking stronger beers in smaller measures, constantly demanding exciting flavours – it just seemed that the time was right”.

The beer is brewed with hops added at three different stages and is dry-hopped with three whole cone hop varieties added 'just for good measure'. It is said to boast tangerine, citrus and tropical flavours.
