Lake District hotel given go ahead for luxury resort plans

The planning application, which was unanimously approved by the Lake District National Park Authority, features a range of new facilities, an extra 46-bedrooms, improved infrastructure and renewable energy features.

The four star hotel has been run by the Berry family for over six-decades and the extension will aim to boost tourism in the Lake District while also making a greater contribution to sustainable tourism.

Simon Berry, managing director of English Lakes Hotels Resorts & Venues, said that he is “thrilled” to have the support of the park authorities.

“In setting its vision for the park to be ‘world class’, it is now clearly supporting business to deliver on that vision and is showing the faith to back us on this project,” he said.

“Our desire to create excellence and make significant improvements at one of our flagship hotel sites is a real fillip for both business and tourism in the area, especially at a time when the Lake District is seeking to attain World Heritage status.”

Further improvements mooted in the plans include upgrades to the infrastructure of the hotel such as a dedicated entrance to the site, a new atrium, new restaurant facilities, a multi-sports pitch, indoor and outdoor spas, a heated infinity pool and a sauna.

The expansion is estimated to be completed by the end of 2017.
