Marriott International is to launch its millennial-targeted Moxy brand in Slough as part of a ‘two-in-one’ hotel development.

The dual-branded hotel will feature a 144-room budget Moxy and a 92-room extended-stay Residence Inn, operated under a single lease in the same building.

It will open at the former Central Library site in early 2019 and be operated by Cycas Hospitality as part of a deal with Slough Urban Renewal.

Eduard Elias, Cycas Hospitality managing partner, said: “This is an exciting time to be investing in the heart of Slough.  The town is undergoing a huge transformation and after the opening of Crossrail will become a real hub between Heathrow and Central London.”

Marriott describes the millennial-targeted Moxy brand as ‘a boutique hotel with the social heart of a hostel’.

The Slough opening is the eighth Moxy site planned for the UK, as the budget brand continues to expand across Europe.

Openings are also lined up in Aberdeen (late 2016), London Excel (early 2017), London Stratford (mid-2017), Heathrow (late-2017), Edinburgh Airport (late-2017), York (late-2017), and Bristol (early 2018).

Marriott opened its first Residence Inn in Edinburgh in 2011, and is set to open its second site in Aberdeen in summer 2017.

The long-stay brand is aimed at both business and leisure customers and features fully-equipped kitchens and living areas in each room.

Growing trend

The Slough site joins a growing number of dual-branded hotel developments in the UK, with operators increasingly using the sites to split construction and operational costs.

‘Two-in-one’ hotels feature separate entrances and front desks, but can share guest amenities and staff.

Earlier this year a HVS report predicted that European guests could soon be offered a choice of three brands in one location, after Accor opened a Pullman, Novotel and Mecure in one development in China.
