Actor Robert De Niro has been granted planning permission to build an 83-room luxury boutique hotel in Covent Garden.

The Oscar-winner has teamed up with BD Hotels and property firm Capco to launch The Wellington Hotel.

It will be De Niro’s first property outside the United States, after he opened New York’s Greenwich Hotel with hoteliers Ira Drukier and Richard Born in 2008.

The trio have created a brand new concept for Covent Garden, complete with luxury spa, two restaurants, a deli/café and member’s club built around a central courtyard conservatory.

The hotel will span six adjacent buildings within the Covent Garden Conservation area, three of which are Grade II listed.

De Niro said: “My partners and I are pleased with the unanimous consent of Westminster City Council for The Wellington Hotel project in Covent Garden. We would like to thank them for putting their trust in our vision. We now look forward to starting the construction and to the completion of the hotel, of which we will all be proud.”

The project is Capco’s first landmark hotel to open in Covent Garden since it acquired the estate ten years ago.

Ian Hawksworth, chief executive of Capco, said: “Robert De Niro and BD Hotels have emerged as the world’s leading luxury hoteliers, so The Wellington Hotel will be a must-visit destination for visitors to the area.”
