Chef Gareth Webster, previously at Michelin-starred restaurant the Chester Grosvenor and Cartmel pub The Pig & Whistle, is now head chef at The George and Dragon in Clifton, Cumbria.

Webster joins the restaurant, pub and B&B ‒ which won the ‘Dining Pub Award’ in the 2017 Good Pub Guide ‒ bringing experience of several head chef positions across the Lake District, including The Wheatsheaf in Brigsteer.

Webster is to join The George & Dragon shortly after its sister property, Askham Hall, has started to supply it with fresh produce from its own restaurant garden.

This is in addition to the rare breed pigs and shorthorn beef cattle that owner Charles Lowther rears for both properties.

Chris Curry is general manager across both sites.

“This is a wonderful opportunity to join an already very successful team, and I am extremely honoured and excited to get started,” says Webster. “I’m looking forward to playing my part in providing a great all-round dining experience, and making the most of the abundant produce and resources from the Lowther family estate.”

“[Gareth] is a well-respected chef who is familiar with the seasonal demands of a Cumbrian restaurant,” says Curry. “We are all looking forward to working with him and we’re sure that he will bring an enormous amount of knowledge and experience.”
