JD Wetherspoon’s and Pret A Manger have topped the Food Standards Agency’s (FSA) hygiene ratings of the largest 20 high street brands.

Research by the FSA shows that 93.1 per cent of Wetherspoon’s and Pret’s portfolio achieved a score of five or more in the ratings, compared to national average of 83.7 per cent.

The ratings, which run from zero to five, are determined by local authority food safety officers with a rating of five demonstrating that the establishment has ‘very good’ food hygiene standards.

Catriona Stewart, who heads the Food Hygiene Ratings Scheme said that the organisation’s aim is to reduce consumer risk and encourage them to ‘look before they book.’

“Telling people about hygiene standards in food outlets in a way that is clear and easy to understand has made a real difference. We’ve seen standards improve and more and more businesses are able to show their customers that they take food hygiene seriously.”

Wetherspoon founder and chairman, Tim Martin, said: “Food hygiene is of paramount importance to our customers and rightly so.

“Our pub management and staff work hard to ensure that our pubs offer customers the highest levels of food hygiene at all times. We are extremely pleased that our pubs offer the best standards of food hygiene in the FSA ratings over the past five years and we will strive to maintain and improve our ratings in the coming months and years.”

Hygiene ratings are displayed on green and black stickers, or you can find out the rating of an establishment by asking a member of staff or by checking online here.
