Good news for restaurateurs who diversify into ‘meals to take home'. New research from Mintel shows that the market for ready meals in Europe has grown by five per cent between 2006 and 2007 to reach €8.4bn.

The research showed the rise is being driven by healthy preprepared meals. Sales are predicted to grow a further 18 per cent by 2011, making the market worth nearly €10bn. The UK is the biggest market for ready meals, with a €3bn share.

Mintel's European Consumer Analyst Michelle Strutton said that the growth of the ready meals market in the UK "shows that the UK is still king of convenience".
