Warmer weather saw January sales rise for operators

The UK’s leading pub and restaurant operators witnessed a 10.7 per cent like for like sales rise in January compared to last year, when snow hampered trade for much of the country.

According to the Coffer Peach Business Tracker, which monitors sales performance across 18 major pub and restaurant companies including Whitbread, Gondola and Tragus, total sales for January climbed 11.4 per cent.

The buoyant figures come after Britain experienced one of the coldest December’s in history, which saw like for like sales drop 4.2 per cent on 2009.

”The positive news this past month will be tempered by the fact that January last year was itself badly affected by snow with like-for-like sales then down 5 per cent on 2009,” said Peach Factory’s Peter Martin.

“However, the double-digit recovery this year more than compensates for that and will encourage operators into hoping that this performance may be more than just a readjustment.”

January, being a traditionally slow month, saw performance fall 28.5 per cent on December 2010.

“We are comparing the four trading weeks of January with the five of December, so it is actually not a bad result at all,” added Martin.

The sector is expected to experience another successful month in February, after news today that Valentine’s Day bookings are up 25 per cent on last year.
