The Light Apart Hotel in Manchester has acquired a former ice rink in Brighton and plans to convert the neglected site into its second property.

The new hotel, designed by Sir Terence Conran’s design company Conran and Partners, will feature 60 boutique hotel-style apartments plus a ground floor restaurant and café with terraced seating.

Brighton & Hove City Council hope The Light Hotel proposed for Queen’s Square will help regenerate the area after the ice rink closed in 2003.

Clive Lynton, The Light’s managing partner, said: “We have a track record in delivering successful high quality projects around the UK, but Brighton & Hove has a special affection for us. I live nearby, and I visit the city often, as do my fellow partners. We want to do something that we can all feel is right for the site and will be an asset. We will work with the community to get the best out of this site; it needs some action and we have the right team to deliver this.”

Many Brighton and Sussex residents however have been opposed to the redevelopment, as the Queen’s Square ice rink was the last remaining permanent rink in the county.

A spokesperson for Brighton & Hove City Council said that while the development was subject to planning permission, an application was yet to be submitted by The Light Apart Hotel or its sister company Stonehurst Estates.
