Chester Racecourse has become the second major sporting venue in the UK to open a restaurant in conjunction with a top chef.

Heathcotes Outside, the catering company launched by celebrity chef Paul Heathcote, has joined forces with the racecourse’s management to open Restaurant 1539, a 180-cover restaurant that offers fine dining to both race-goers and locals.

Named after the year racing first started in Chester, 1539 follows the lead of Marco, the restaurant launched by Marco Pierre White in collaboration with Roman Abramovich at Chelsea Football Club’s ground, Stamford Bridge.

Consultant Max Gnoyke, who has been involved in setting up the restaurant and sourcing local ingredients for the British menu, told BigHospitality Chester`s management had wanted to create a restaurant that would enhance the appeal of a visit to the racecourse, but that was also a business in its own right.

He said: “We have the best of both worlds here. The site overlooks a beautiful racecourse, but the racecourse is also in the town centre, so it is as much for the locals and tourists as it is for people coming to the races.

"The racecourse management have thought beyond the race day and want customers to come back and enjoy a meal here at other times."
