The poll of more than 2,000 people, released less than three weeks before Valentine's Day, is the first to calculate what financial contribution singles seeking love make to the UK economy. The 37 million dates that happen every year contribute over £3bn to the economy with hospitality and entertainment industries taking over a third of that cash spent in the pursuit of love.

Shehan Mohamed, senior analyst at the Centre of Economic Business Research, who also worked on the figures, said: “The research shows that dating provides a multi-billion pound windfall for the UK, directly benefiting a range of industries like retail, food & drink and entertainment."

The average single person embarking on a date spends £47 according to the figures and other industries that benefit from this financially include transport, hairdressing and clothes but it is the hospitality industry that recieves the biggest boost.
