Gary Usher launches crowdfunding campaign to open third restaurant

Gary Usher has launched a crowdfunding campaign to open his third restaurant Hispi in Chorlton, Manchester.

The chef launched Sticky Walnut in Chester on a shoestring budget in 2011 and successfully crowdfunded £103,000 to open Burnt Truffle in Heswall last year.

Usher has already secured a site for Hispi but wrote on the Kickstarter page that it was an ‘understatement’ to say the venue needed work as it currently has no kitchen or toilets and ‘almost no walls’.

He has been promised a £100,000 bank loan on the condition that he raises a further £50,000.

In a video about the campaign Usher said: “I want to open a third restaurant because I fucking love it, I love little neighbourhood restaurants. I love the challenge and everyone else does. It’s keeping everyone excited about what we’re doing, the guests as well.

“I’m a bit of a one trick pony to be honest, bistro’s is what I know. Hispi’s going to be the same thing, friendly and no pretence with nice service but nothing stuffy.”

Under Kickstarter’s rules the project must raise the full amount in 30 days or it will not be funded.

Since launching the page on 7 March over £17,000 has already been pledged towards the restaurant.
