Melt Room, London’s first gourmet grilled cheese cafe, is opening in Soho in May.

Targeting the capital's fast-food lunch market, the café combines New York style sandwiches with the best of British farmhouse and artisan cheese.

All items on the menu are cooked and pressed using a hot brick method, including The Classic, made with Keens sharp cheddar double slices, and Slow and Low Lamb Shoulder with Mustard Dressed Greens and Melted Swiss.

Calorie conscious consumers can try the Green Goddess with Quark, while the breakfast menu features both a Super Veggie option and the Full English grilled sandwich.

Founder Andrey Datsenko said: “I spent the better part of my youth studying hospitality management in New York and very quickly became addicted to the delicious and hearty grilled cheese the city had to offer.

"I am very excited to launch Melt Room, not only to fix my own grilled cheese cravings, but to offer Londoners a gourmet American-inspired version of this much loved snack.”

Expansion

Though the restaurant currently seats 12, there are plans to introduce a local delivery service.

A PR representative for Melt Room told BigHospitality that there were no immediate plans to expand to multiple sites. She said: "The focus is very much on making this first independent site a success, and seeing how well Londoners respond to grilled cheese!".

The gourmet American food market is growing in the UK, with operators such as Mac and Cheese specialists The Mac Factory expanding in the capital this year.

Melt Room opens in May at 26 Noel Street, Soho, London, and will operate from 7am for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
