The hotel had been left unfinished for 30 months after developer Rockstock Investments went into administration in January 2009.
Now, following an acquisition by the 18-strong Cairn Hotel Group , Hilton intend to transform the property into a 179-bedroom Doubletree by Hilton, complete with 11 conference rooms, a business centre, fitness centre, restaurant and bar.
Rob Palleschi, global head of Doubletree by Hilton, said he hoped the hotel would benefit from the five million passengers travelling through the adjacent airport each year.
“With more than 250 hotels and resorts around the world, including eight hotels across the UK, we are delighted to continue expanding our UK presence into North East England by creating a rewarding experience with our warm and welcoming style of hospitality at the soon-to-be DoubleTree by Hilton Newcastle International Airport,” he said.
The hotel will be the ninth Doubletree by Hilton in the UK, and follows the launch of Doubletree by Hilton Istanbul Moda, the group’s 250th worldwide property under the brand.
