Budget hotel chain Premier Inn has secured planning permission for a new 60-bed hotel and 200-cover restaurant as part of a mixed-use development in Northern Ireland.

Located at Crescent Link in Londonderry, the hotel represents a £6m investment by Premier Inn into the local economy, creating up to 60 new jobs in the Waterside area and boosting the local building trades during the construction phase.

John Bates, head of acquisitions for Whitbread Hotels and Restaurants said: “Premier Inn is a Northern Ireland success story. Since our first hotel opened in 2008, we have enjoyed fantastic results in Northern Ireland and we are now the largest hotel operator.

The hotel is scheduled to open in time for the City of Culture celebrations in 2013.

“Crescent Link is an ideal location and obvious choice for our first hotel in Londonderry,” added Bates. “We are pleased to be playing a part in the City of Culture celebrations by offering visitors a great value accommodation option.”

Exciting project

The new hotel is part of a larger, innovative mixed-use development at Crescent Link being promoted by the Orana Group.

Mark Adams, development director of Orana, said: “We are delighted to have Premier Inn on-board as part of this exciting project. The hotel and brand sits perfectly on the proposed scheme and will complement other intended uses including a major Sainsbury’s supermarket, multi-screen cinema, retail, offices and private healthcare facilities.”

The budget hotel chain is continuing to expand its reach and earlier this year opened its 600th UK hotel. By 2014, Whitbread plans to add another 15,000 rooms to its brand in the UK.
