Restaurants across the country will be celebrating Earth Hour by switching off their lights and serving candlelight dinners on 19 March.

Earth Hour is the world’s biggest annual celebration of the planet that supports the environment.

The Sustainable Restaurant Association (SRA) has teamed up with WWF and is calling on all restaurants to support the global sustainability event. SRA also runs a sustainable food initiative called Food Made Good.

Brasserie Blanc; Tom's Kitchen; Red Carnation; The Savoy; River Cottage and OXO Tower Restaurant have already agreed to switch off their lights between 8.30pm to 9.30pm on the evening.

“Thousands of restaurants, from Michelin-star to fish and chips shops are amongst those working with Food Made Good, demonstrating that good food can be produced sustainably,” said Raymond Blanc OBE, president of the SRA.

“I’m extremely proud that many of these restaurants will be switching off their lights for WWF’s Earth Hour to showcase how easy it is to cook some delicious food that’s good for you and the planet, while reminding us that together we have the power to make change happen.  And we already are.”

Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, founder of River Cottage, said:“The food we eat has a significant impact not just on our health but also on the health of our planet. We can all make small changes to our eating habits that will have a lasting effect on the future of our planet. WWF’s Earth Hour is the perfect opportunity to start these changes, enjoy great sustainable food and celebrate our love for the planet while also putting a spotlight on the issues affecting its future.”

Participating restaurants will receive a full pack to help them promote their event to diners and both the SRA and WWF will be promoting all of the participating restaurants on their websites and on social media. Contact Aimee Hartley nvzrr@gurfen.bet for information.
