British oyster championships call for shuckers
British best oyster openers are being called to apply for the Tabasco annual British Oyster Opening Championship, which marks the beginning of our native oyster season.
Contestants will have to prove their skill in ‘shucking’, and open and display 30 native oysters as quickly as possible, without compromising on quality. The competition will this year be held at Bentley’s Oyster Bar and Grill in London, and entries will be judged by a panel of seafood experts and chefs, according to the Galway International Festival rules.
The winner will receive a trophy and cheque for £250, as well as the chance to become the best oyster opener in the world at the International Championships in Galway.
This year’s event will be held on 1 September, and anyone interested in entering should call Tess Robinson at Food Matters on 020 7371 6466, or email tess@foodmatters.co.uk.
