Kevin Sutherland and James O'Donnell, Sous Chef and Sommelier, respectively, from the Balmoral Hotel in Edinburgh, have brought home the title of International Copa Jerez 2007. Representing the UK at the final of the biennial food and sherry pairing competition in Jerez, Spain, Sutherland and O'Donnell battled international competition from sommelier-chef duos from around the world, including the US and Denmark.
The Copa Jerez is part of The Sherry Institute of Spain's campaign that has seen a revival of interest in wines from Jerez. It was judged by a panel including Heston Blumenthal of The Fat Duck and Juli Soler of El Bulli in Catalonia. Sutherland and O'Donnell‘s "attractive and daring"
menu included a Banana and Hazelnut Frangipane with Chocolate Sorbet and Banana Cream with a Moscatel from Guttierez Colosia, for which they also won an award for Sweet Wine and Dessert Pairing.
