Petrou Brothers' fish and chip shop has been named the UK's best fish and chip shop in an annual competition now in its 19th year.

The final was judged by 16 industry representatives, including Tom Parker Bowles, Ainsley Harriott and Gary Barnshaw, the Development Chef at Heinz, which sponsors the competition. The Petrou brothers, Mark and Pete, beat nine other finalists and were chosen because of their passion and enthusiasm, firstclass produce, sustainable practices and for encouraging customers to try new types of fish, said the judges. The shop sold its one millionth portion in 2006. Second prize went to Anstruther Fish Bar and Restaurant in Fife, and Henley's of Wivenhoe in Colchester came third.
