Hot on the heels of As You Like It in Jesmond, which marked the arrival of Newcastle's first gastropub, the city's Black Door Group has announced tentative plans to expand its empire in a similar direction.
Despite having lost out on a proposed site for the venture, co-owners David Ladd and chef David Kennedy are determinedly pushing ahead as they look to increase the size of the company's portfolio. This currently comprises Brasserie Black Door, located in nearby art gallery The Biscuit Factory, and Black Door. The latter helped put Newcastle's current restaurant revival on the culinary map when it picked up the prestigious Rémy Martin Restaurant Excellence Award last year.
Meanwhile, there are plans to move Black Door from its original home later this year, with Ladd citing space as the reason for the relocation to a larger, as yet unconfirmed, city centre site.
