Thomasina Miers, who won the title of MasterChef in 2005 and went on to work at Petersham Nurseries in Richmond under Skye Gyngell, is to help launch a Mexican restaurant in London's Covent Garden. The restaurant, Wahaca, will be launched by Broom Co Chandos, part of the Capricorn group, and is due to open in August. Miers, who has also taken a small share in the restaurant, said she will be in the kitchen for at least three months to set it up.
Miers said, "I'm really excited about making proper Mexican food. It's going to be our interpretation of market eating, which is fast, delicious and healthy. It'll be nothing to do with Tex-Mex." On the menu there will be Cochinita Pibil (a marinated, slow-cooked pork recipe with pickled onion relish) as well as ceviches and salsas made on-site daily. Spend will be £12 to £14 a head.
Miers described the 6,000sq.ft basement site in Chandos Place where Wahaca will open as "amazing".
Miers worked at Petersham Nurseries until last year, when she left to concentrate on writing her cookbook.
