The Walnut Tree Inn near Abergavenney in Wales has closed and it is uncertain whether it will reopen.

The restaurant's website apologised to customers for closing at short notice and said it is "closed temporarily pending some reorganisation". However there are also reports of involuntary insolvency. Owner Francesco Mattioli was not available for comment.

Mattioli, who comes from Lombardy in northern Italy and worked at Cecconi's, Le Caprice and the Neal Street Restaurant, all in London, bought the Walnut Tree Inn with Stephen Terry in 2001, from long-standing owners Franco and Ann Taruschio. Terry left to run the Hardwick restaurant in Abergavenny.

In 2004 an episode of Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares criticised the pricing on some of Mattioli's dishes.
