Canteen in London's Spitalfields has won the Observer Food Monthly's Best Restaurant award at the magazine's annual award ceremony, held at Il Bottaccio in London SW1.

Its inexpensive modern British menu drew more than 2,500 customers a week.

The original Canteen opened in 2005, with a second site opening this summer in the newly refurbished Royal Festival Hall.

Gordon Ramsay's Maze was runner-up, Best Newcomer went to environmentally friendly community restaurant Acorn House in Kings Cross, while The Left Bank in Glasgow won Best Cheap Eats Readers'

Award and Rocotillos in Bristol collected Best Breakfast. The Fence Gate Inn in Lancashire won Best Sunday Lunch, Pintxo People in Brighton won Best Bar and Fifteen Cornwall won Best Location.
