Highlights from the globally renowned design fair

The 46th annual Salone Internazionale del Mobile – the world's leading design fair – took place in Milan at the end of April, and was attended by an incredible 1,500 exhibitors from over 30 different countries, as well as over 100,000 visitors from all around the world. As usual, the latest launches from both established and up-and-coming designers look likely to set trends in interior design for the coming years.

For those who couldn't make it there this year, here are some of the hottest new designs for 2007:

  1. STOOL CRAZY Young British design company, Established & Sons, launched ranges from über-designers like Future Systems, Barber Ogersby and Zaha Hadid, as well as a range of stools from young designer Michael Marriott. The ‘Alto' stool is available in three heights, including a bar stool (850mm). This sleek, stylish cantilevered stool comes with leather or ply seat, and with a nickel-plated or powder-coated frame. Available from September 2007, from Established & Sons. establishedandsons.com, 020 7608 0990
  2. ATTACK OF THE TRIPODS Germany-based Classicon launched a new bar stool ‘Triton', a collaboration with industrial designer Clemens Weisshaar. The shapely, svelte three-legged number boasts a handbag hook tucked away discreetly under the ‘anatomicallyformed' seat. It is available with three different frames: chrome, powder-coated and Rilsan (for outdoors), and in four colours as well as leather. Prices start at €280 (excl. VAT). Contact info@classicon.com, or Aram Design Ltd, 020 7240 3933 classicon.com
  3. WELL BALANCED Outdoor furniture specialists, Dedon, from Germany launched its Yin Yang interlocking loungers in woven Hularo® fibre, in bronze and platinum. Perfect for hotels with a poolside area to decorate, but one pair of them will make a great focal point on any sunny terrace. £5,590 from Leisure Plan 01279 816001 Dedon.de
  4. ARMS WAY It's S.C.P's 21st year exhibiting in Milan. One of its new launches to celebrate is the Avery armchair by young British design star, Russell Pinch. In natural or wenge-stained oak, the armchair supplements Pinch's dining chair in the collection. Armchair, £209 incl. VAT; dining chair, £175, incl. VAT. 020 7739 1869, scp.co.uk
  5. FRENCH FANCY French ‘wunderkinder', brothers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec have teamed up with Magis Design, the 31 year-old Italian design company. Magis usually work with moulded plastics but the Bouroullecs' SteelWood chair is – as it sounds – made of steel and wood (beech). The feel is mid-century bistro style, so it will work well in a restaurant looking for that modern classic feel. Available in all-black and all-white from this Autumn from Magis. magisdesign.com Words Hilary Armstrong
  6. PAPER WEIGHT For something different from the ubiquitous Ghost chair, there's always the new Origami chair from Biebi. Made of transparent polycarbonate, these stackable chairs come in black or red, in opaque or transparent versions. Available from August €116 biebisedie.it Salone Internazionale del Mobile, Milan

The next exhibition takes place April 16-21 in 2008. For more information visit cosmit.it or email: info@cosmit.it
