River Restaurant set to reopen in 2009 following £100 million revamp

The Savoy on London's Strand is to close for a 16- month refurbishment in December and will relaunch its historic River Restaurant when it reopens in spring 2009.

The restaurant has only been open for breakfast and Sunday brunch for the past three years but will reintroduce lunch and dinner following refurbishment.

The refurbishment will cost upwards of £100m and will include upgrading the suites overlooking The Thames and renovating guest rooms and all public areas.

The magnitude of the Savoy's overhaul means that its other restaurants "might be affected but not to the same degree as the River Restaurant", according to a spokesperson. She also said that as far as she was aware, Marcus Wareing will reopen The Savoy Grill and Banquette within the hotel. Wareing previously told Restaurant magazine that rumours he is leaving the Ramsay stable are "rubbish".

General Manager Kiaran MacDonald said, "We hope to set new British standards for excellence in design, décor and personalised service."
