Pret A Manger sandwich chain is thought to be considering a buyout, instead of the formerly mooted floatation, after unsolicited approaches by several equity firms.

The company, which was set up by Julian Metcalfe and Sinclair Beecham in 1986 and now includes over 160 sites in England and Scotland as well as Prets in New York, Singapore and Hong Kong, announced this spring that it had sought advice from investment bank NM Rothschild to advise on a possible future floatation.

This was thought to be a bid to raise funds for further expansion overseas. Pret is currently 33 per cent owned by McDonald's which bought the stake for £50m in 2001.
