INDUSTRY body Seafish has announced it’s 20th Fish and Chip Shop of the Year, with the award going to The Townhead Cafe, in the Scottish Borders town of Biggar.
Andy’s Fish Bar in Swadlincote, Derbyshire was second, with Seniors in Thornton Cleveleys in third.
Several rounds of judging, a mystery shopper visit and a presentation culminated in the win by The Townhead Caf», and for the first time in the competition’s history entrants were judged on their commitment to building a sustainable future for the industry.
Points were given according to use of sustainable species and the measures in place to encourage customers to try something new.
Gordon and Sandra Hillan, owners of the Townhead, collected their prize from celebrity chef Ainsley Harriott at the Royal Garden Hotel in London, beating 9 other finalists to the prize.
An impressive 255 million portions of fish and chips are sold every year, making it Britain’s most popular takeaway, thrashing curries by nearly two to one.
The traditional fodder contains a third less calories and approximately 40 per cent less fat than many other popular take-aways.
