A restaurant belonging to TV chefs James and Chris Tanner - the stars of Ready, Steady, Cook - has been badly damaged by a fire which tore through the building yesterday afternoon.

THE PLYMOUTH restaurant belonging to TV chefs James and Chris Tanner has been devastated by a fire which ripped through the building yesterday.

The stars of Saturday Kitchen and Ready, Steady, Cook estimate that the damage at their Barbican Kitchen restaurant could exceed a quarter of a million pounds.

Chris Tanner told local press: "The fire annihilated the kitchen and severely damaged a large section of roof.

"It is a devastating blow for us. But the most important thing is that no-one was hurt or killed.

"I understand that the kitchen is completely wrecked, but I won`t be able to assess the damage or say how long we are likely to be closed until I`ve been allowed inside when it is safe enough."

Firefighters` initial thoughts are that the blaze started in the ducting of the kitchen`s extractor system.

A spokesman for the fire service in Plymouth said: "The fire is under investigation at the moment, and our team is working with the police."

The brothers other establishment in Plymouth -Tanners Restaurant - was awarded the AA Restaurant of the Year England for 2007-2008.
