ANDAZ Hotel in London has announced the world’s first ‘reader in residence’, a period with the hotel hosting a creative guest that harks back to great long term visitors who became things of hotel legend.
Monet painted London from his room in the Savoy back in 1899, Fay Weldon created some of her remarkable writing, Hemmingway made waves around the world, and now Damian Barr, author and regular Times contributor, will be offering his services as reader from a ‘book menu’ to guests at the former Great Eastern hotel.
Barr will be staying for two weeks in April, during which time other guests will be able to book him to read from the selected list, or from any other they chose.
The author will also provide a ‘bibliotherapy’ service, based on the concept of reading being a healing experience.
Barr explains; “Basically I’ll talk to guests and find out what they love/loathe reading. I’ll diagnose their needs and prescribe appropriate texts: revive travel-worn senses with a sumptuous Georgette Heyer, enjoy a classy giggle with Nancy Mitford or some glamorous gangsters with Jake Arnott.”
