Roxburghe gets £7.5m refurb
McDonald plough millions into central Edinburgh hotel in bid to be the best

A top rated Edinburgh hotel is to undergo an extensive £7.5m makeover in a bid to make it the city’s premier luxury four-star hotel.

Owned by the Paragon Group and managed by Macdonald Hotels and Resorts, the centrally located Roxburghe Hotel is currently in the first phase of a planned 18 month refurbishment programme that will create 50 larger rooms, 1 presidential suite and 4 junior suites in addition to 144 standard rooms.

Redevelopment of the hotel’s public areas will take up £1.7m of the budget and will include a contemporary restaurant and bar. Subject to planning permission, the existing 300 sq metre central atrium will be removed and the hotel’s entire roof will be enclosed by glass. A new entrance will also be created on George Street and Charlotte Square.

In addition, a new conference and banqueting reception area will be built, complete with a hospitality area and three meeting rooms with capacity for over 200 people.

General Manager, Chris Wayne-Wills, commented: “This is a significant investment which will help to reposition The Roxburghe as one of the top hotels in Edinburgh. The substantial investment in leisure, conference and meeting facilities will ensure these facilities are among the best in the capital.”

The hotel will remain open during the refurbishment. “We are also working closely with guests who have booked meetings and functions at the Roxburghe over the time of the refurbishment to ensure that their events are not disrupted in any way,” said Wayne-Wills.
